Dr Lynn Selemon's insightful commentary in the January 2000 isuue of the ARCHIVES¹ addressed several important and interesting issues regarding our report² on decreased dendritic spine density on deep layer 3 pyramidal cells in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of subjects with schizophrenia. She raised the concern that the inclusion of subjects with schizoaffective disorder in the schizophrenia group may have confounded the interpretation of our study, noting that "a weakness in this study is the inhomogeneity of patient populations included in the single ‘schizophrenic' and ‘other psychiatric' groups." In addition, she commented that "restriction of the psychiatric comparison group to 1 disease, eg, major depression, would have been more informative."
